Arthur Baker's Copybook of Renaissance Calligraphy: Mercator's Italic Hand
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (October, 1981)
Authors: Arthur Baker, Gerhard Mercator, and William Hogarth
Average review score:

Fine addition to Calligrapher's library
While Gerhardus Mercator was known for his geographical work and knowledge, few knew that he was also a very fine calligrapher. This book is an excellent resource for those interested in increasing their knowledge of calligraphy styles. WHat is particularly interesting about this book is the fact that the leters are very true to Mercator's original letters because he cut his own printing blocks. The swooping letters, very elegant, are organic in form, not harsh or rigid. All the designs, by the way, are copyright free - a nice bonus.

As Long As I Live (Thorndike Large Print Candlelight Series)
Published in Hardcover by Thorndike Pr (Largeprint) (April, 2000)
Author: Emilie Baker Loring
Average review score:

Beautiful moments of disclosure
Joan and Craig fight the first time they meet, but are thrown together by their life in the community, and soon figure out they're meant for each other. It would be hard to not like this book, for its romantic appeal as well as clean, good writing. No poorly-done or explicit scenes or romance-killing selfishness here--it's clear that the hero and heroine will stay together as long as they live.

Baby Jesus (Baker Street Kids Storybooks)
Published in Paperback by Xs Books (June, 1985)
Authors: V. Gilbert Beers and Ronald Beers
Average review score:

A wonderful introduction to a toddler about Jesus
This is a tiny treasure for toddlers. The words are simple and easy to understand, and the story is not to long for their short attention span. This is not just a good Christmas book, but a wonderful introduction to baby Jesus.

The Baker Bible Dictionary for Kids

A very good reference book for kids
My 9 year old daughter bought this book and we have found it answered many questions she had about the Bible that I couldn't answer. The langauge is very age appropriate. The setup of the book is great and the phonetic pronunciation was helpful.

The Baker Street Irregular: The Unauthorized Biography of Sherlock Holmes
Published in Hardcover by Players Press (August, 1994)
Author: Austin Mitchelson
Average review score:

Sherlock Holmes: blackmailer, thief, murderer.
Mitchelson's study of the life of Sherlock Holmes is no work of fantasy; based fair and square on the facts, as related by Dr Watson and other Holmes critics and commentators, the result is a cracking good yarn that pulls up the accepted beliefs about Holmes and takes a good look at the roots. Holmes' unhappy childhood, dependence on drugs, and criminal activities are examined in depth, leaving the reader in no doubt that our preconceptions of Holmes, and his portrayal in the media, are very wide of the mark. To read this book is to challenge one's faith in the great detective's ability... but it is an important document, too, since it exonnerates several "crime lords" and "criminal masterminds" of the late Victorian period. I thoroughly recommend this book to any serious Sherlock Holmes fan. Chapter seven, especially, is breathtaking.

The Baker Street Irregulars in the Case of the Cop Catchers
Published in Hardcover by E P Dutton (April, 1982)
Author: Terrance Dicks
Average review score:

It is very confusing and mixed-up but it is very interesting
I think it's very interesting and very scary at the same time. I just read it today(May 5, 1999) and I am very interested in The Baker Street Irregulars.

The Baker Street Reader: Cornerstone Writings About Sherlock Holmes (Contributions to the Study of Popular Culture)
Published in Hardcover by Greenwood Press (May, 1984)
Author: Philip A. Shreffler
Average review score:

Excellent compendium of Sherlockian writings
This is an excellent selection of classic BSI (Baker Street Irregulars) and other criticism on the Sherlock Holmes stories, with entries by such famous Sherlockians as Rex Stout, Vincent Starrett, Christopher Morley, etc. Most of the individual articles are available elsewhere, but as a compiliation of essential writings about Holmes this is hard to beat. Mr. Shreffler does a fine job of sorting the wheat from the chaff -- I have dozens of books on this subject, and if you are only going to purchase one Sherlockian book in your life (but who in their right mind would ever do that?), this book would be a fair choice.

Two potential caveats for newcomers: 1) I am not sure why this book is so expensive; perhaps the number of remaining copies is limited. When I acquired my copy a few years ago, it was substantially cheaper. If you're on a tight budget, you can probably get more Sherlockian bang for your buck elsewhere. 2) Keep in mind that this is almost entirely a compilation of SHERLOCKIAN criticism, as opposed to the more conventional brand. In other words, the articles proceed under the tongue-in-cheek assumption that Holmes & Watson were real people -- thus, this book will probably not help you very much if you are looking for sources for an academic, literary study of Doyle's work. If you are reading for personal enjoyment, though, and have the cash, it's great fun, and **highly** recommended.

A fine addition to this volume would be Shreffler's "Sherlock Holmes by Gas-Lamp", which includes highlights of the first 40 years of the Baker Street Journal.

Baker's Book of Chocolate Riches
Published in Hardcover by Outlet (August, 1987)
Average review score:

Chocolate Paradise
This is a slim little volume but totally packed with decadent, delicious delicacies, all made of chocolate. The Wellesley Fudge Cake with Hungarian Chocolate Frosting that is pictured on the cover is a personal favorite of mine, a true "company" cake to bake if you want heaps of praise. Try Cream Cheese Brownies, Pot de Creme au Chocolat, Chunky Chocolate Cookies that Tollhouse doesn't want to know about, or the incredible Chocolate Mousse Pie au Rhum. The recipes are clear and easy to follow. Mouth-watering photographs illustrate this book and will definitely encourage you to branch out and try some new recipes that are destined to become favorites. It has a convenient wire spiral binding so it lays flat for ease of use in the kitchen. The various sections are as follows: Chocolate...Gift From the Gods; Cakes; Pies; Cookies; Desserts; Candies; Toppings; Chocolate Know-How. After his friend who started the chocolate mill drowned at sea, Dr. James Baker took over the Dorchester company in Massachusetts and made it a household word in large part due to the excellent quality that he insisted upon. Stemming from these New England roots there are several keepsake recipes in this book from the Boston area. The Wellesley Fudge Cake and Hungarian Chocolate Frosting alone are worth searching this book out and paying whatever they ask.

Baker's Concise Bible Atlas: A Geographical Survey of Bible History
Published in Paperback by Baker Book House (March, 1988)
Author: J. Carl Laney
Average review score:

Puts the events of the Bible into a proper perspective.
The unique geography of Israel and other Biblical locations is described as a backdrop to the events of the Bible. The time period covered is from about 2166 B.C. to 70 A.D. An additional chapter is devoted to events from the Biblical period to the present. Forty maps and over fifty photographs are included. I found the book invaluable in helping to put the events of the Bible into a proper historical and geographical perspective.
